South Korean high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok (29, Yongin City Hall), who earned a valuable silver medal at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, smiled brightly as he stood on the podium.
The organizing committee held the official men’s high jump awards ceremony at the Medal Plaza in front of the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, on the afternoon of the 17th.
Woo Sang-hyeok wore his silver medal and stood on the podium. Although he couldn’t play the national anthem from the highest point of the podium as he had hoped, he showed a joyful expression with a bright smile, true to his nickname, “Smile Jumper.”
He posed with the medal, and also took a “selfie” with gold medalist Hamish Kerr (New Zealand) and bronze medalist Jan Jeszteba (Czech Republic).
He was also seen comforting Jeszteba, who was shedding tears with emotion.
Woo Sang-hyeok cleared 2.34 meters in yesterday’s (16th) men’s high jump final, earning a silver medal behind Hamish Kerr (New Zealand), who cleared 2.36 meters.
It seemed as though the long-awaited gold medal was within reach as he briefly took the lead when clearing 2.34 meters, but he had to swallow his disappointment when Kerr cleared 2.36 meters on his first attempt.
However, Woo Sang-hyeok gave it his all and achieved a valuable result. He had no regrets, especially considering his performance despite a calf injury just a month before the competition.
Woo Sang-hyeok, who earned his second silver medal at the outdoor World Athletics Championships, following the 2022 Eugene World Championships, will return home via Incheon International Airport on the afternoon of the 18th.
