Naju City Mayor Yoon Byeong-tae announced on the 21st that the city has created a ‘Child Safety Green Forest’ within the school zones of Naju Elementary School and Ewha Kindergarten, establishing a safe and pleasant environment for children’s commute.
This project was initiated to enhance both safety and comfort by incorporating nature into the commuting paths within school zones.
The ‘Child Safety Green Forest’ is an innovative urban forest designed with children’s safety and health as the top priority. It naturally separates pedestrian walkways from roads, reducing traffic accident risks while acting as a buffer zone to protect children from harmful substances such as fine particulate matter.
As part of this initiative, 6,020 trees of ten different species, including Cornus officinalis, golden privet, and emerald arborvitae, were planted around the school zones of Naju Elementary School and Ewha Kindergarten. Furthermore, 3,563 flowering plants, including asters and astilbes, were added to enhance natural beauty throughout the year.
The project also included the construction of a new 150-meter pedestrian walkway, providing a safe walking environment for children.
Notably, golden privet was used on both sides of the commuting paths to create a natural boundary, establishing a ‘Tree Yellow School Zone’ that visually ensures children’s safety.
This nature-friendly design is expected to provide psychological comfort to children and create a space where they can enjoy a beautiful garden-like landscape.
Mayor Yoon Byeong-tae stated, “It’s deeply meaningful that the Child Safety Green Forest allows children to commute in a safe and pleasant environment. I hope this forest becomes more than just a commuting path; I envision it as a venue for ecological education in the city, a space for psychological comfort, and a place of joy.” Naju = Reporter Jo Jae-ho samdady@viva100.com
