(Korea Creative Content Agency) Veteran actors Shin Gu and Kang Boo-ja were honored with the prestigious Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit, the second-highest medal, at the 2024 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards. The star-studded ceremony took place at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul on Thursday.
Now in its 15th year, this annual event represents the pinnacle of government recognition in the realm of popular culture and arts.
Shin, who first graced the stage in 1962, continues to captivate audiences with his powerful performances, proving that true talent only gets better with age.
“The end of each play ignites my excitement for the next,” Shin remarked upon receiving his award. “Acting is my sole talent. I owe this honor to the trailblazers before me and the colleagues who’ve shared this journey. This award belongs to all of us.”
Kang, a revered figure in Korean entertainment, has earned the moniker “the nation’s mother” through her numerous maternal roles over a career spanning six decades.
“My hope is that future generations will speak of me as a performer of remarkable talent,” Kang mused during her acceptance speech. “I aspire to be an artist they’ll long to see again, whose laughter, voice, and gestures they’ll yearn to experience once more. I’m committed to leaving a lasting legacy.”
The Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit, the third-highest honor, was bestowed upon singer Kim Chang-wan and writer Lim Ki-hong. Both have made significant contributions to beloved TV programs like “Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend” and “Humor No. 1.”
“This medal belongs to Sanulrim,” Kim said, referring to his band. “I dedicate it to Kim Chang-ik in heaven and Kim Chang-hoon, who continues to create beautiful music. What began as a small garden has grown into a lush forest of melodies over five decades, nurtured by our fans’ love. I pledge to remain a singer who stays connected to his audience.”
The ceremony also saw singer Lee Moon-sae receive the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit, while actor Choi Soo-jong was presented with the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit.
In a touching moment, Lee chose to serenade the audience with a line from his 1985 hit “A Little Girl” rather than deliver a traditional speech.
Choi, accompanied by his wife and fellow actor Ha Hie-ra, expressed deep gratitude for her unwavering support throughout his career.
“Standing here today, I’m humbled by the achievements of seniors like Shin Gu and Kang Boo-ja,” Choi reflected. “While I acknowledge my imperfections, it’s my dedication that’s brought me here. I vow to maintain this commitment and work towards a future where actors can enjoy both financial stability and personal fulfillment.”
Among other notable recipients, film director and screenwriter Kim Han-min, known for his decade-long work on the Admiral Yi Sun-sin trilogy, received a Presidential Commendation. Rising star Chun Woo-hee and K-pop hitmaker Kenzie were among those awarded Prime Minister Commendations.
The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized ten artists with commendations, including popular bands Jannabi, Day6, and Silica Gel, as well as actor Ahn Eun-jin and comedian Yoon Sung-ho.
