There’s an actor who started working as a dishwasher at a restaurant and received a proposal to become a chef.

This actor, Kim Nam-gil, has showcased a diverse range of performances without overlapping characters in works like “Strong Woman Do Bong-soon,” “My Name is Kim Sam-soon,” “Queen Seondeok,” “Pirates,” “The Outlaws,” and “The Fiery Priest.”

Kim Nam-gil developed his dream of becoming an actor after watching a production of “King Lear” in Daehangno during high school.
Despite his parents’ opposition, he got accepted into the Theater Department at Seoul Arts University, but he ended up dropping out due to family circumstances and worked part-time jobs instead.

After that, Kim Nam-gil began his acting journey by taking on small roles, stage management, and theater management. To make ends meet, he worked as a dishwasher at a busy teppanyaki restaurant.
Because the restaurant was thriving, the dishes piled up constantly, and the high workload led most employees to quit after only two to three months.
However, Kim Nam-gil worked diligently for six months, catching the attention of the owner, who asked him, “Would you like to learn how to cook?” and offered him a position as a chef, allowing him to learn a lot about kitchen work.

By this time, Kim Nam-gil, who had been focused solely on the theater stage, often felt guilty for not being able to help his parents as the eldest son and struggled with his dreams.

Following a senior’s advice that he “should play in a bigger pond,” he challenged himself by taking the public audition exams for the three major broadcasting networks, ultimately passing as the top candidate in MBC’s 31st talent recruitment in 2003, which marked his debut.

Since then, he has built a diverse filmography with dramas such as “Best Theater,” “Strong Woman Do Bong-soon,” “My Name is Kim Sam-soon,” “Goodbye Solo,” “Queen Seondeok,” “Bad Guy,” “The Fiery Priest,” “Those Who Lose Their Minds to Evil,” and films like “Modern Boy,” “The Beauty Inside,” “Pirates: Bandits on the High Seas,” “The Outlaws,” and “Memoir of a Murderer.”
Recently, he delighted fans by returning after five years with the highly popular “The Fiery Priest” Season 2, which has already sparked a lot of buzz.
