Busan City Increases Inner-City Bus Services During Rush Hours, Reducing Wait Times by Up to 2 Minutes

[iNews24 Reporter Jung Ye-jin] As citizens’ use of public transportation increases due to the escalation of the energy crisis alert, Busan Metropolitan City has begun to expand city bus operations during commuting hours. The plan is to minimize inconvenience to citizens by reducing the interval between buses, focusing on major urban routes.

The city of Busan will implement increased bus operations during peak commuting hours starting from the 11th.

This measure is in response to the government’s raising of the energy crisis alert level and the implementation of vehicle restrictions in both public and private sectors, which has led to an increase in demand for public transportation.

Busan City has established criteria to increase bus services when the increase rate of city bus passengers exceeds 5% compared to the same period last year. The recent usage rate has risen to 5.8%, leading to the decision to increase operations.

The increased services will be implemented from 7 AM to 9 AM and from 6 PM to 8 PM. The increase targets 32 routes with 737 buses that pass through major downtown areas such as Seomyeon, Busan Station, and Nampo-dong.

As a result, the number of operations will increase from 1,125 to 1,344, an increase of 219 trips. The average interval between buses is expected to be reduced from the current 9 minutes to 7 minutes.

The subway has already begun increased operations as well. Busan Transportation Corporation has added 16 more train operations per day during commuting hours since the 8th of last month. By line, 4 additional trips each were added to Line 1 and Line 2, and 8 to Line 3.

The subway interval, which was previously about 5 minutes, has now been reduced to 3.5-4.5 minutes.

Hwang Hyun-chul, Director of Transportation Innovation Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, said, “We will do our best to secure transportation capacity so that citizens can use public transportation without inconvenience even in the energy crisis situation.”
