South Korean prosecutors have requested a seven-year prison sentence for Ahn Sung-hyun (안성현), husband of actress Sung Yu-ri (성유리), on charges related to soliciting cryptocurrency listings.
According to legal sources on October 31, prosecutors called for a seven-year sentence during the closing arguments on October 29 at Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Agreement Division 11, presided over by Judge Jeong Do-seong.
Prosecutors also requested a fine of 2 billion won, the confiscation of two luxury watches, and an additional forfeiture of 1.5 billion won from Ahn Sung-hyun. For Lee Sang-joon, former CEO of Bithumb Holdings and co-defendant, they sought a five-year sentence along with the confiscation of 30.5 million won and an additional 1.525 billion won in forfeiture.
Ahn Sung-hyun, a former professional golfer, and Lee allegedly accepted bribes to arrange the listing of “Coin A” on Bithumb, one of South Korea’s major cryptocurrency exchanges. From September to November 2021, they reportedly accepted 3 billion won in cash, two luxury watches worth 400 million won, and a 11.5 million won premium restaurant membership from businessman Kang Jong-hyun.
Ahn Sung-hyun is also accused of deceiving Kang by claiming that Lee had urgently requested 2 billion won in listing fees, which Ahn Sung-hyun allegedly took for himself, further constituting a violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes and fraud.
The sentencing hearing for Ahn Sung-hyun and Lee is scheduled for December 26.
Ahn Sung-hyun, who married actress Sung Yu-ri in 2017, is the father of twin daughters.
