Public outrage has erupted following reports that one of the young assailants responsible for the fatal assault on late director Kim Chang-min has released a hip-hop track in the wake of the incident.
Photos and personal information of two suspects in their twenties have recently circulated on online platforms, including YouTube. Allegations suggest that one of the assailants, identified as “A,” collaborated with an acquaintance to release a hip-hop song in March. The track, available on music streaming services and YouTube, features provocative lyrics such as “If you keep staring, I’ll wreck your face” and “The innocent me is long gone, I’ve turned into a thug.” While some have alleged that the assailants are affiliated with an organized crime group operating in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, the organization has reportedly denied these claims. The incident occurred on October 20 last year when director Kim Chang-min visited a restaurant in Guri with his son. A dispute escalated into violence, resulting in Kim losing consciousness. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brain dead due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Honoring his final wishes, Kim’s organs were donated, saving four lives before he passed away. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage later released showed Kim being subjected to a brutal assault by the group of young men. An eyewitness reported, “There were six assailants in total. The victim re-entered and was overwhelmed. The tall one (suspect) put him in a chokehold, and he lost consciousness inside the establishment.” The victim’s family reports that they have yet to receive any apology or communication from the assailants. Adding to the tragedy, Kim’s son, who has a developmental disability and was present during the assault, remains unaware of his father’s death. Kim, born in 1985, was an accomplished filmmaker. He directed award-winning films such as “Whose Daughter” (2016) and “Exit 3 of Guui Station” (2019), both of which received accolades at the Police Human Rights Film Festival. The Korean Film Archive notes that Kim also contributed to the art departments of several notable films, including “The Great Kim Chang-soo” (2017), “Keys to the Heart” (2018), “The Witch” (2018), “Witness” (2018), “The Drug King” (2018), “Astronomy: In the Sky” (2019), “The Closet” (2020), “Story of You and the Rain” (2021), and “Firefighter” (2024).
